New Measures to Address Prison Escapes in Buenos Aires

The Buenos Aires City Government is implementing new policies to address recent prison escapes, including the creation of a new Undersecretariat for Criminal and Penitentiary Policy.

New Measures to Address Prison Escapes in Buenos Aires

The Minister of Justice, Gabino Tapia, will be in charge of the new Undersecretary of Criminal Policy and Penitentiary Affairs in the City of Buenos Aires, following a series of escapes of detainees in police stations and correctional facilities.

The decision was made after the escape of six detainees from Police Station 3 in Once, followed by another similar incident in a correctional facility in Caballito. In the last ten days, a total of three escapes have been recorded, raising concern and alarm among the authorities.

In response to this situation, the Minister of Security, Waldo Wolff, issued a strong warning to the police officers involved in the escapes, indicating that they will be moved from "active duty" to "availability or inactive," both for actions and omissions in these cases.

The proposed Undersecretary will be in charge of Leandro Halperin, while it is expected that lawyer Francisco Quintana will assume the position of Secretary of Justice. These measures aim to prevent future escapes and improve security in the city's detention facilities.
